We’ve always enjoyed learning about different cultures whenever we’re travelling. However, in this COVID-19 season where non-essential travels are halted, we took the chance to look deep into our own Chinese dialect culture in Singapore. We are very lucky to be able to work together with The Merry Men Works to share the cultures of the 5 main Chinese dialects in Singapore through this series - 自己人 One of us.

The brief was simple and straightforward: To introduce dialect culture to a younger target audience. But dialect culture is a complex subject with so much nuances, it’s fading away and it’s changing with time. Everyone has their own dialect story, we felt compelled to speak to many people to understand the different narratives and the dialect culture they have lived and experienced. Or what they have not.

自己人 Side A brings us through the 5 main Chinese dialects in Singapore - Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka and Hainanese.
